Appointment of Rev’d Julian McAllen

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Rev’d Julian McAllen, currently curate of Christ Church, Epsom Common as our new Associate Priest.

Julian will begin his ministry in the parish at a special service at 6pm on Sunday 7th May, at St James’ Finchampstead.

Julian has written a letter introducing himself to the parish, a copy of which was given out at all our churches today, Sunday 29th January.

Firstly, may I say that it is with great excitement that I join the staff of the Parish of Finchampstead and California as Associate Priest. Before I carry on let me say a little bit about myself. I grew up in a clergy family and have been a member of the Church of England as long as I can remember. I was baptised by my grandfather who was an Anglican clergyman so I have the responsibility of being the third generation of clergy in the family.

Most of my childhood was spent abroad as my father was an Army Chaplain. During this time I was sent to boarding school in Belfast which was a massive change from the warmer climates of the Eastern Mediterranean and the island of Cyprus where we had been posted. After spending most of my childhood living abroad my father was appointed as Chaplain to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1988. I switched schools to Farnborough Sixth Form College and then went up to London to study Economics and a post graduate certificate in education in Business Studies

My career in teaching spanned sixteen years and this took me to comprehensive schools in Barking in Essex and Hornsey in north London as well as a private sixth form college in the Surrey Hills. The last ten years of my time in teaching was as a Head of Department in North London.  I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a teacher but it was during this period that I became heavily involved in my local church and felt a calling to full time ordained ministry.

In 2011 I started my full time training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford. I embraced college life and this led to spells as Chapel Warden, Treasurer of the Junior Common Room, and playing football and cricket for the Hall. Since 2013 I have been the Curate of Christ Church, Epsom Common. This has been a great experience for me and has including such things as speaking at interfaith rallies, the Epsom Derby, St Alban’s Cathedral, a favela church in northern Brazil and walking through the centre of Epsom with a cross on my back.

I am really excited about joining a team of people who are passionate about the goodness of God and his love for humanity demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ. I hope I will be able to encourage people in their walk with the Lord through good teaching and discipleship and a shared vision for all of God’s creation. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many nice people at my interview and look forward to making many more friends once I start.

Yours in Christ,

                           Julian
