Mothers’ Union

Mothers’ Union is an international Christian charity that seeks to support families worldwide. Our four million plus membership spans over 80 different countries. Not all mothers or even all women, our members are also singles, married, parents, grandparents, or young adults just beginning to express their social conscience.  Our mission is to:

  • promote and support married life
  • encourage parents in their role to develop the faith of their children
  • maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service
  • promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children
  • help those whose family life has met with adversity

Finchampstead and California Mothers’ Union meet in St James’ Church Centre on:

  • 2nd Thursday of each month at 1:45 for 2.00 pm
  • 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:00 am for our special Corporate Communion in Church
  • ‘There is generally at least one evening meetings each year at 7pm for 7.30pm. Watch out in the notices for dates and topics.

Our branch membership is generally between 30 and 40, and we look forward to welcoming anyone who may be interested to join in our meetings. These usually include a talk by a guest speaker, as well as a delicious tea. We also support the toddler group– “Fledgelings” – which meets on a Tuesday afternoon in the Church Centre during term time. We enjoy making their tea and refreshments and also cater for their annual Christmas party. We regularly support our Diocesan & Deanery projects; monetary gifts are also sent to the “Mothers’ Union Overseas” and “Away From It All” funds (the latter providing holidays for needy families in the UK)

Mothers’ Union Prayer

Loving Lord,
We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers’ Union as we seek to share your love
through the encouragement, strength and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus’ name.   Amen

The Mothers’ Union Millennium Tapestry

Hanging in the St James’ Church Centre is the Millennium Tapestry which shows the life & organisations of St. James’ Church in the year 2000.

The project was initiated by Teresa Misselbrook who was the Branch Leader at the time. The first square was begun in December 1997 by Eileen Burt, who sadly died in February 1998. The needlework was continued by 8 of our members who actually stitched the Tapestry: Pippa Dunn, Sarah Owen, Joan Ray, Dorothy Taylor, Nan Watson, Teresa Misselbrook, Carolyn Fox and Nicky Alder.

Why not visit, and see it taking pride of place watching over the sweeping staircase in the Church Centre. A booklet detailing how the Tapestry was made is located nearby.

For more information on how to join the Finchampstead and California Mothers’ Union, please contact the Branch Leader, Sarah Owen via the Parish Office.
